Midlands manufacturer: predictable spend and Cyber Essentials

A Midlands manufacturer moved to predictable IT spend, achieved Cyber Essentials, and gained a single support team they can actually call.

The situation

A manufacturer in the Midlands had grown used to IT costs that moved around from month to month, with invoices that were hard to predict and harder to plan against. Alongside the budgeting headache, the business needed to demonstrate proper cyber security practice — both for its own peace of mind and because customers and partners were starting to ask for it.

The challenge

Surprise invoices were arriving on a near-monthly basis, making it difficult to plan technology spend as part of the wider business budget. There was no consistent point of contact for support, so every issue meant explaining the setup from scratch to whoever picked up the call. And the business had no formal certification to point to when asked about its security posture — a gap that was starting to matter more as customers tightened their own supply chain requirements.

What FNS changed

FNS moved the manufacturer onto a transparent, per-user pricing model, so IT costs became a known, budgetable line rather than a monthly surprise. Alongside that, FNS carried out a full Microsoft 365 baseline review, tightening up configuration, licensing and security settings across the tenant to bring it in line with good practice. That groundwork fed directly into a structured run at Cyber Essentials, working through the certification's requirements methodically rather than treating it as a box-ticking exercise.

How we worked together

Rather than leave the manufacturer to work through a rotating cast of support staff, FNS put a named team in place — the same engineers the business speaks to every time, who already know the environment and don't need re-briefing on every call. That continuity made the Cyber Essentials work more straightforward, since the same people carrying out the day-to-day support were also the ones driving the certification forward.

The outcome

The manufacturer now has IT spend it can actually plan around, rather than budgeting for surprises. Cyber Essentials has been achieved, giving the business a recognised standard to point to with customers and partners. And support now runs through a single, familiar team rather than an anonymous helpdesk queue — something that has made day-to-day IT feel far less like a lottery.
